Top Bamberg Accommodations By Area

Altstadt/Old Town – For Sightseeing

Bamberg’s Old Town is a great place to stay!

For a classic Bamberg experience, there is no better place to stay than the Old Town. Called the Altstadt in German, this is the UNESCO World Heritage area we talked about in the top. The mix of medieval buildings with restored and preserved architecture makes it a wonderful place to stay.

This is also where you will find many of the top attractions like the Altes Rathaus (shown above), the Bamberg Cathedral (Dom), and many shops, restaurants, and breweries where you can enjoy various treats or beverages like Bamberg “smoke beer”! We loved the Old Town and – while it can get busy in the summer – it’s still a top place to stay for a reason!

The Altstadt makes a great area to stay if you are only in the city for a day or two and/or want to dive into the town’s history. You can still walk to the other areas of the city (across the rivers) quite easily from here so hotels here make a nice central base to explore from.

Featured Accommodations in the Bamberg Old Town

Below are some of the top-rated places to stay in the Altstadt area. You’ll find a mix of hotels and some guesthouses and apartments. You can also still easily get to the train station from this side of the town and it’s not impossible to find places to stay with parking if you travel by car.

german public square with Grüner Market stall in bamberg
Grüner Markt is a nice part of the town centre with shops and market stalls…

Across one branch of the river on what is essentially an island is another part of the Old Town situated around Grüner Markt.

This area is made up of a lovely pedestrian mall with many shops, bakeries, cafes, bars, and other stores. This side of town feels a bit newer but still has colourful buildings and beautiful architecture.

In fact, some prefer this side of the river over the heart of the Old Town because it is less busy with those looking to sightsee in Bamberg. We can see both sides.

This area is lovely to stay in as there are a number of hotels in this area. There are also a number of sights on this side of the river like the Neptunbrunnen, Maximiliansplatz, and the Naturkunde Museum.

Of course, this side of the river also has an area called “Little Venice” which is a number of small timbered buildings that line the river like they do in Venice! You can see it better from the Old Town across the river but it’s technically on this side if you’re looking for it!

Featured Accommodations in Grüner Markt

Below are a number of places to stay in the Grüner Markt area.

This district makes up a large chunk of the town centre but is great because you are located right in the middle between the Old Town and the train station. Below are a number of top-rated hotels you can check out, many of which offer parking (compared to the older side of the Old Town).

Lastly, we have the area farthest from the heart of the Old Town. This area runs along Luitpoldstraße and directly connects the Grüner Markt area to the train station.

So, this area is good if you are travelling by car because accommodations in this area usually have parking and you don’t have to worry about driving into the Old Town to find a spot to park. You can also hop on the highway easily from this side of town.

This area is also convenient for those travelling by train because the station is so close to the hotels in the area.

If should be noted that even though this is the farthest area from the Old Town, you can still easily walk there in about 20 minutes. The scale of these areas is not very large overall so any of them makes for a nice place to stay.

There are also a few restaurants and breweries in this area – but again, you are just a quick bridge crossing to the Grüner Markt area (and another few minutes to the Old Town, if needed).

Featured Accommodations in Luitpoldstraße

Below you can find a handful of the top hotels in this area. Since there is more physical space – compared to the Old Town – hotels can usually offer parking spaces.

In general, it’s a more residential and quiet location but the accommodations that are here are well-regarded and very popular!
