Accommodations By Type

Like most big cities, Montreal has lots of accommodation options to suit different styles and types of travellers.

Whether you’re a group of friends visiting for the weekend, a couple looking for a romantic getaway in Montreal, or travelling as a family with kids, you’ll find lodging in Montreal including hotels, bed and breakfasts, apartments, and hostels.

This post is split up into two main sections: The first section covers places to stay in Montreal by accommodation type while the second part walks you through some great areas to stay in Montreal.

So, if you know what kind of Montreal accommodations you are looking for, you can get started looking right below.

Alternatively, if you want to book in a specific neighbourhood in Montreal, you can scroll down further to learn more about each one and have a look at accommodations in that specific area.

Hotels in Montreal

As the largest city in Quebec (but not the capital city), there are loads of hotels in Montreal to fit everyone’s budget and travel style.

While a majority of Montreal hotels are located in the downtown area, there are many historic ones in Old Montreal and a few smaller hotels scattered around the various neighbourhoods (we’ll discuss below).

As you might imagine, hotels in Montreal – especially in/around Downtown – can be more expensive. However, you can definitely find a few nice hotels in Montreal that won’t break the bank.

Budget/Cheap Hotels in Montreal

Briefly mentioned above, Montreal is a diverse city when it comes to accommodations. You can make your trip as lavish and expensive as you like – but you can also travel on a budget and still have a great time.

Hotels reflect this diversity in travellers. If you are searching for cheap places to stay in Montreal, you can find some cheaper hotels in Montreal.

Keep in mind that “cheap” doesn’t necessarily mean the hotels are dirty or in bad areas. In Montreal, there are many well-rated cheap hotels that just don’t offer extra amenities compared to other hotels – and that’s what makes them more affordable.

What’s more, the accommodations below are all in great areas close to or around Downtown. This means you don’t have to stay very far away from the action to save a few bucks.

If you are looking for a budget hotel in Montreal, check out these options below:

Boutique Hotels in Montreal

For those staying in Montreal and looking for a boutique experience, there are several Montreal boutique hotels to choose from.

Many of these cool places to stay in Montreal are located in Old Montreal. Often, the historic setting adds to the hotels, and vice versa.

You can find beautifully designed hotels with exposed brick and old wood timber beams exposed throughout the timeless buildings. Sometimes these accommodations are referred to as Inns, but they function very much like upscale hotels.

Many of these hotels have a chic and classy design but some lean to the hip and trendy side of things. Whatever your style, below are several boutique hotels in Montreal you might consider for your next city adventure:

  • Hotel Nelligan A charming, elegant boutique hotel in Old Montreal steps from the Basilica (Our Pick)
  • Auberge du Vieux Port – A historic yet charming inn-style hotel across from the river in Old Montreal
  • Hotel Place d’ArmesA chic, beautiful hotel across the square from the beautiful Basilica in Old Montreal
  • Hotel Gault – A cool, stylish hotel in Old Montreal a very short walk from Notre-Dame Basilica
  • HOTEL10 – A contemporary hotel with bar right on Sherbrooke Street close to Le Plateau and Downtown

Luxury Hotels in Montreal

Those looking to be pampered on their Montreal getaway will find a few luxury hotels in Montreal to suit their fancy.

These five-star hotels in Montreal offer travellers top amenities like access to pools and spas in great locations around the city – like the Golden Square Mile downtown. You’ll find some of the nicest hotels in Montreal located here.

Some of these hotels are by brands you might know, while others are housed in historic buildings for a real taste of Montreal’s past. Have a look at these top-rated Montreal luxury hotels:

  • Le Mount Stephen – A historic yet trendy 5-star hotel in the heart of the Golden Square Mile (Downtown) (Our Pick)
  • Hotel Birks Montreal A stunning, elegant 5-star hotel right in Downtown Montreal across from Phillips Square
  • Sofitel Montreal Golden MileA bright and sophisticated hotel also in the Golden Square Mile (Downtown)

Guesthouses/Bed and Breakfasts in Montreal

A nice touch about Montreal is that you can find classic bed and breakfasts in the city. Bed and breakfasts in Montreal often have a cozy feel – and breakfast – that can make for a more “homey” experience while on the road.

In Montreal, these types of accommodations are also sometimes classified as “guesthouses”. Many of the guesthouses in Montreal are cozy and can offer breakfast. Others simply offer cozy accommodation with a shared kitchen for you to use.

That said, most of the bed and breakfasts are located in quieter, more residential neighbourhoods like Le Plateau or The Village/Hochelaga-Maisonneuve.

These quieter areas not far from the city centre can make for a nice escape at the end of a long day of adventure.

Those hoping for a B and B in Montreal’s old town will be slightly disappointed. The main type of accommodation there is hotels (boutique ones, at that). B&Bs are mostly located in Le Plateau/Mont-Royal or The Village/Hochelaga-Maisonneuve (both covered below).

B&Bs/guesthouses are also often run by local hosts who are passionate about the city and share their knowledge with their guests. You can check here for guesthouses and bed and breakfasts in Montreal.

We’ve included a variety of these cozy accommodations to get you started:

Apartments/Aparthotels in Montreal

Another popular accommodation option is apartments and aparthotels in Montreal.

A rental apartment often comes with a kitchen so that guests (especially families, larger friend groups, budget travellers) can prepare meals on their own. Having a private place to call “home” for a longer stay in Montreal can allow you to explore and recharge on your terms.

Having said that, there is a housing crisis in Canada (supply and affordability) and larger cities – like Toronto and Vancouver – are particularly bad. Montreal isn’t immune, either.

This is why we’d suggest getting all of those perks of an apartment but in an aparthotel. These “suite-style” hotels are better regulated by the city and offer travellers apartments (often with kitchenettes/kitchens). They also usually have a reception and an onsite restaurant for breakfast.

This way, you get all the best parts of an apartment with the aid of hotel staff close by, if needed. You can check here for great apartments/aparthotels in Montreal.

Below are a few nice aparthotel options in great locations around Montreal to get you started:

Hostels in Montreal

If you are on a budget or backpacking through, there are several hostels in Montreal you can choose from.

Unlike in Toronto, there are more than just a few Montreal hostels. This is because Montreal is just more of a backpacker city (affordability, alternative culture, etc.) so the hostel culture grew with it.

Eric once stayed at Auberge De Plateau for a night when he was visiting the city. The location is awesome (Le Plateau), the staff were super friendly, the room was great, and the other travellers were like a small community.

Check here for great hostels in Montreal

If you want to look at more Montreal hostels, you can start searching below:

  • Auberge De Plateau A classic friendly hostel with summer terrace situated between Le Plateau and Downtown (Our Pick)
  • The Alternative Hostel of Old Montreal – An artsy hostel located in Old Montreal
  • M MontrealA modern hostel with rooftop terrace located between Old Montreal, Quartier des Spectacles (downtown) and the Village!
  • HI Montreal – A cozy, trendy hostel in south end of Downtown close to Metro/train stations
  • Samesun Montreal Central – Another classic, social hostel close to Berri-UQAM Metro Station in Downtown

Accommodations By Neighbourhood/Area

Having covered Montreal accommodations by type, we can now break down some of the best areas to stay in Montreal. The city is technically an island with the city centre located between Mount Royal and the St. Lawrence River.

There are many great Montreal neighbourhoods in and around this central area to choose from. This post covers five main areas in/around the Montreal city centre and one further away (Montreal Airport).

Each of these neighbourhoods offers a different side of the city and caters to different travellers and their needs.

Remember: The best place to stay in Montreal for you might be very different than for another traveller – so browse with your needs in mind.

Montreal has one of the busiest transit systems in North America. Many areas of the city are well-connected with the Metro (subway), buses, and commuter EXO trains. You can get yourself an OPUS card if you’re staying in Montreal for a few days!

In each section below, we will give you a brief description of each neighbourhood/area, cover a few things to see and do, and then provide good accommodation options in each.

Keep in mind, these are not all the areas of the city. The areas below are – in our opinion – among the best neighbourhoods to stay in Montreal for visitors (and/or where we have stayed previously). Sorry, NDG (Notre-Dame-de-Grâce) – we still love you.

If you know you’re travelling to Montreal and want an overview, you can get started browsing accommodation top picks sorted by neighbourhood and theme below. Many of these areas are quite close together so there’s not a bad option here!

Top Montreal Accommodations By Area

Safety in Montreal: Montreal is generally a safe and pleasant city. Of course, with any major centre, you will need to take usual precautions when walking about as a tourist (especially in Old Montreal). The Hochelaga-Maisonneuve area was indeed more unsafe but that’s no longer the case. The area is changing and developing with shops, cafes, etc. The area near Berri/UQAM Metro Station isn’t perfect… but it’s also not dangerous. It’s just a huge station so it’s a busy, hectic place.

Downtown Montreal/Golden Square Mile – Central & Lively

tall city buildings with blue sky above and water in distant background.
A shot of Downtown from the famous Mount Royal Lookout Point.

The heart of the city centre – known as Centre-Ville – is sandwiched between the base of Mount Royal and the St. Lawrence River. Technically speaking Downtown Montreal is the area with the tallest buildings – referred to as the central business district.

Downtown includes things like The Bell Centre (hockey games), the Gare Centrale (central train station) for Via Rail, and Bonaventure Metro Station (a main artery to the Metro).

However, when people say “downtown” they are also often referring to areas right beside this small area of tall buildings.

For example, there’s another neighbourhood located here called Golden Square Mile. This historically affluent area from Canadian history sits beside the central business district (actual Downtown).

It’s now a healthy mix of old architecture, many shops, buildings, and food places and to go out for drinks near Concordia University.

It’s also where you find the base of trails to Mount Royal, the prestigious McGill University, and some attractions like The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts.

Check here for Accommodations in Downtown Montreal

In general, this downtown core area is central, lively, and busy. There is never a dull moment here! This whole downtown area is also where you’ll find “The Underground City” – a connection of underground passages that connect two main metro lines.

This area often feels like the heart of the city centre with shops, food courts, and connections between office buildings, hotels, and transit stations. It’s similar to Toronto’s PATH and definitely handy in the cold Montreal winters!

Old Montreal vs Downtown: Downtown Montreal and Old Montreal are not the same areas. Downtown has skyscrapers/central train station while Old Montreal has historic stone buildings along the historical Old Port of Montreal.

In this downtown area, you’re within walking distance of many sights and attractions – including Old Montreal. You’re also never far from a Metro station to get you anywhere else in the city. It’s also great for business travellers or those travelling by ViaRail (train) to and from the city.

Old Montreal – Historic & Charming

old building with clock tower and snowy street in front with benches.
Old Montreal is always worth a wander – in all seasons!

If you want a more historic and European feel while visiting Montreal, then staying in Old Montreal is for you.

Known as Vieux-Montréal in French, the buildings and streets are rich with French-Canadian history – much of it predating the existence of Canada!

This charming area also includes the Old Port of Montreal, which is the area right along the St. Lawrence River.

Historically, this entire area comprises the original settlement of Montreal. So, there is no shortage of shops, cafes, restaurants, and even a few tourist attractions along the cobblestone streets.

Depending on who you ask, Old Montreal is considered the best neighbourhood to stay in Montreal (but, of course, it’s not for every traveller!)

For things to see and do, you’ll find the gorgeous Notre-Dame Basilica of Montreal located here. It’s worth going inside.

Along the water, there are walking paths with river views and a few museums like the Montreal Museum of Archaeology and History and the Montreal Science Centre. Another hit is La Grande Roue de Montréal – a large ferris wheel at the river’s edge!

For getting around, this area is relatively compact and walkable. You can also reach it by walking from the city centre or via the Metro (Champ-de-Mars or Place-d’Armes are close stations).

Featured Accommodations in Old Montreal

As for where to stay in Old Montreal, there are many hotels in this area that one might consider boutique style.

Places to stay in Old Montreal can sometimes be a little more expensive because it’s such a beautiful/popular area – but you pay for the location and amenities.

large wall with colourful mural and people sitting at tables with umbrellas in front.
Mural Fest is an annual event that mainly occurs in these areas!

Located to the north of the city centre (sort of around Mount Royal), you’ll find Le Plateau/Mont-Royal. This whole area is undoubtedly one of the coolest neighbourhoods in Montreal.

This sprawling area is divided from the downtown area via Sherbrooke Street at its south end. This means that depending on where you stay in Le Plateau, you can walk back to things in the downtown area.

In the north end of the area, Le Plateau intersects with other sub-areas like Mile End and Laurier. This neighbourhood is packed with artists, students, and Montrealers living in row upon row of unique, old townhouses.

Check here for accommodations in Le Plateau/Mont-Royal

So, this area is lively, trendy, and one of the better areas for Montreal nightlife.

Along busy streets like Rue Rachel, Saint-Denis, St Laurent, Duluth Avenue, and Mont-Royal, you’ll find endless shops, cafes, restaurants, bars, and more. You’ll also come across lots of street art (hence the hosting of Mural Fest).

Try La Banquise for 24-hour poutine (among the best in the city) and craft beer!

As far as neighbourhoods in Montreal go, this is a great area to stay in. There are even a few attractions here like Schwartz’s Famous Deli, access to the hiking trails at/on Mount Royal, and a few green spaces like Jeanne-Mance Park and La Fontaine Park.

It’s a relatively flat area so walking around is easily done. Once you get to know the streets, the whole thing is a big grid system of things to try out and places to go. Also, this area is serviced by both Sherbrooke Station and (mainly) Mont-Royal metro station.

Featured Accommodations in Le Plateau/Mont-Royal

Below are some of the top choices for accommodations in the Le Plateau/Mont-Royal area. There are not a ton of hotels here.

Instead, the residential vibe lends itself to more guesthouses, inns, or apartments which you can stay in.

Quartier des Spectacles – Artsy & Cultural

Heading back towards downtown, Quartier des Spectacles is a subsection of the downtown core.

However, we wanted to include it as its own area. This is because there’s a distinct vibe (it’s not surrounded by the tallest buildings) and has a set of attractions focused more on the arts.

These particular few blocks have a few attractions/other areas tucked into them like the Latin Quarter, Place des Arts, MAC Museum, La Maison Symphonique, Théâtre Maisonneuve, a big urban park known as Parterre du Quartier des Spectacles, and more.

Check here for accommodations in Quartier des Spectacles

Geographically, this area is just northwest of the downtown core (mentioned above) but is also sandwiched between both where Le Plateau-Mont-Royal starts at Sherbrooke Street and where Old Montreal begins closer to the water. So, it’s a good area of Montreal to stay in.

As far as transit goes, you can walk this area easily and it’s accessible via both Place-des-Arts and Saint-Laurent metro stations. It’s also reachable from central downtown via the Underground City, in case you were wondering.

coloured beads hung across outdoor street with shops in buildings below.
The Village is definitely a welcoming place to be!

If the distance to downtown isn’t totally important to you, you could stay in The Village or Hochelaga-Maisonneuve. We’ve grouped them here but they are different so read on!

These areas north/northeast of Downtown are somewhat set along the river yet are still pretty central compared to other areas of Montreal. That said, you are certainly not right in the heart of downtown here.

The Village is a compact area just north of Quartier des Spectacles (on the other side of Berri-UQAM Metro Station).

It’s the heart of the LGBTQ+ community in Montreal and can have lively nightlife due to a high concentration of bars and clubs.

You can get here easily via Beaudry Metro Station – and you’re also closer to La Ronde (Amusement Park) on St. Helen’s Island!

Check here for accommodations in the Village

Hochelaga-Maisonneuve is one step further north of The Village (after the neighbourhood Sainte-Marie). This quieter area is much more residential and made for local Montrealers. Hochelaga is named after the 16th-century Iroquois village that sat near the river bank.

That said, staying here allows for quick access to top attractions like The Olympic Stadium/Park, Montreal’s Botanical Garden, and more. Hochelaga is serviced via Joliette and Pie-IX Metro stations.

Featured Accommodations in The Village/Hochelaga-Maisonneuve

Generally speaking, these two areas are grouped because they are where you find a high concentration of Montreal’s bed and breakfasts and apartments. This makes sense given the more residential nature of these areas.

Wherever you stay in these areas, you’re never too far from the metro back to downtown and other areas of the city.

Montréal-Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport – For Flying

As always, we wanted to be thorough when talking about places to stay in Montreal. For this city, that includes staying at/near Montréal–Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport (YUL).

The city’s main airport is technically located in Dorval – but on the same island as Montreal.

YUL is about 30-40 minutes driving – without traffic – from downtown Montreal. You can take a cab/Uber or take the 747 Downtown-Airport Shuttle Bus… but if you get on at Berri-UQAM, it can take 45 to 70 minutes!

So, if you have an early flight out of Montreal, you may choose to stay right at the airport or very close to it to assure you have a less stressful experience.

Having experienced it, Montreal traffic isn’t fun at all. You can check here for hotels near Montreal International Airport.
