Gozo is packed full of awesome hotels (like the Grand Hotel, the Duke, and The Kempinski), apartments with pools, villas, and quaint bed and breakfasts for some peace and quiet.
If you are travelling to Malta for the first time, you might be planning an awesome Malta itinerary – which is something we know ALL about! So you know, this post is JUST about the island of Gozo. To go along with it, here are the best things to do and see on Gozo.
If you are looking for accommodation on the main island of Malta, you can check out our guide on hotels, apartment, and the best places to stay on Malta. We also have a guide on things you shouldn’t miss on Malta, and things to do in Valletta specifically! That said, let’s find you a place to stay on Gozo!
Where to Stay in Gozo – The Best Areas to Stay
There are a few different places/towns/regions where you can stay on Gozo. Some are by the seaside while others give you more of a “small city” feel. It’s important to remember that you can get around the whole island very easily in just a few hours by bus or car.
So if you plan to explore Gozo in full and you aren’t too picky, it doesn’t matter that much where exactly you are staying. That said, some areas are more popular than others because of their attractions and scenery. We’ve outlined a few of them below.
If you want to stay right in the heart of the action on Gozo, you should check out the capital city, Victoria. The small city is basically in the middle of the island which makes it a great base for exploring. It’s also good to know that the major bus terminal is located here.
So, you can explore various parts of Gozo with ease and return back to Victoria at the end of the day for your sleep. Victoria also has some major attractions – most notably the beautiful Citadella, sometimes called old Citadel, high on the hill in the city centre.
In general, there is a mix of accommodations types in Victoria but it’s important to note that you are not immediately close to the water’s edge. It would be a longer walk or quick bus ride to get to the sea. If you are still determining whether downtown Victoria is right for you, you can check here for accommodation options in Victoria. If you KNOW you want to stay in Victoria, check out the hugely popular Duke Boutique Hotel.
Located at the northwest corner of the island, the small towns of San Lawrenz/Gharb feature some top attractions like the Inland Sea, the Gharb Church, and much more. This used to be a very popular area because it was home to the famous Azure Window (shown above).
This massive rock formation collapsed in 2017 during a storm, but people still come to see where it was. It’s also now a diving site and you can still do boat tours of the coast.
The area here is by the sea so you get those coastal views but still have easy bus access to the rest of the island of Gozo. If you want to have a look around for a place to stay, check out accommodations in Gharb/San Lawrenz. If you are absolutely set on staying in San Lawrenz, check out the very popular Kempinski Hotel.
Located on the southwest corner of the island of Gozo, Xlendi is a small seaside village that connects to Xlendi Bay. This tiny village has everything you need – the beach, restaurants, historic towers (shown above),and really great access to the nearby Sanap Cliff hiking trails. It’s also not too far by bus to the Mgarr harbour where you catch the ferry to the main island of Malta. But again, everything on Gozo is only a short distance away!
If Xlendi sounds like the little paradise you are looking for, check here for Xlendi accommodations. If you are dead set on Xlendi for the seaside views and fresh sea air, book a stay at St. Patrick’s Hotel. It is right on the bay.
Located at the northern coast of the island of Gozo, Marsalforn is a well-developed village that is a great place to stay. It’s considered one of the more “touristy” areas on Gozo but it’s still very authentic and charming with the sea so close by.
The top attraction here are definitely the salt pans, where you can talk to Maltese families that still harvest sea salt the traditional way. That said, there are also lots of nearby hikes, bars, restaurants, and accommodations that are right on Marsalforn Bay. The boardwalk is lovely for a stroll, too.
As with most places, you have a great connection from Marsalforn to Victoria and the ferry back to Malta. You can check out seaside accommodations in Marsalforn here and or have a look at the gorgeous Murella Living Hotel to be right in the village.
Finally, one of the last popular areas is Xagħra. Located in the middle like Victoria but shifted to the east of the island, the village is known for one of the most famous attractions in all of Malta – the Ġgantija megalithic temples. These massive temples are thousands of years old! Because of the temples, the village is well connected by bus to everywhere else on Gozo. You are also not too far from one of the best (and only) sandy beaches on Gozo – Ramla Bay Beach.
You won’t be right at the water’s edge in Xagħra but it is a great location for exploring. If you want to browse through places to stay in Xagħra, you can check here. If you know that Xagħra is for you, then you absolutely have to check out see the Cornucopia Hotel.

Remember, stay open minded about the areas these hotels, apartments, villas, and bed and breakfasts are located in. They are ALL well connected and have very few negatives since Gozo is so small!

These can also be referred to as “self-catered” and have everything you would need like a kitchen, bedrooms, and even laundry.
