Gozo Accommodation By Type

Since Gozo is a very small (but popular) island, there are many different accommodation types scattered across the island to suit all different travellers’ needs.

Gozo is often seen as a “getaway” destination for main islanders to escape the hustle and bustle – and understandably so! This makes Gozo the perfect, quiet getaway destination for travellers.

You’ll find a number of quaint farmhouse villas, authentic bed and breakfasts and guesthouses. Even the hotels on Gozo aren’t really “resorts” but quieter havens that offer a much more relaxed stay.

This post is divided into two sections to help you search for the best places to stay in Gozo. This top section is all about Gozo accommodations by type. The second section outlines the best areas to stay in Gozo.

This way, if you know what kind of accommodation you want, you can find top options right away. If you know you want a specific area on Gozo, you can learn more about each one and find what you are looking for with ease!

Below you can find a number of hotels that are on the cheaper side. Again, they are all really nice hotel options to stay at!

We’ve included a variety of great guesthouses and Gozo bed and breakfasts in good areas to get you started:

Flats/Apartments in Gozo

Given the nature of the island, there are lots of Gozo apartments available for rent (also known as flats).

Flats for rent in Gozo can also be referred to as “self-catered” apartments and often have everything you need, like a kitchen, bedrooms, and even laundry. These are often the best if you’re looking for Gozo apartments for short rent.

Typically, these accommodations are for families, groups, or short-stay visitors (a few days or more) who want a base for exploring the island of Gozo (and maybe beyond).

Keep in mind, there are a few different kinds of apartments for rent in Gozo. Some apartments/flats in Gozo are part of a larger rental complex where you share amenities like a pool!

Standalone apartment rentals can be more expensive but generally the prices on Gozo aren’t too out of hand in the first place. There are even apartments for rent with rooftop jacuzzi tubs – see below!

With authentic architecture all over the island, Gozo has made a name for itself when it comes to farmhouse villas for rent because they are charming, beautiful places to stay.

Many hostels come with private rooms and amazing hosts offering great sleep and sometimes better locations than some hotels for the same (or cheaper) price.

Because Malta (and Gozo) are so small, there are only a handful of hostels on the main island and basically only one on hostel on Gozo.

Santa Martha Hostel is located in the main area of Marsalforn with private rooms and a nice breakfast included.

The Best Areas to Stay in Gozo

To be honest, all of the areas below are considered among the top choices – they are all just slightly different from one another.

So, whatever you plan on doing when visiting the island, there should be an area that suits your needs. If you know the kind of trip you want to have (diving, relaxing, hiking, etc.), you can get started looking at these top accommodation picks in each of the areas outlined below!

The capital from high atop the Citadel – taken by Eric!

If you want to stay right in the heart of the action on Gozo, you should check out the capital city, Victoria.

The small, rustic city is basically in the middle of the island which makes it a great base for exploring. It’s also good to know that the major bus terminal is located here.

You can hop on a bus and be basically anywhere on the island in no time at all. That includes the ferry terminal back to Malta.

So, you can explore various parts of Gozo with ease and return back to Victoria at the end of the day for your sleep. Victoria also has some major attractions like St. George’s Basilica with its signature dome that sits atop the city’s short skyline.

Most notably the beautiful Cittadella is a must-see place to explore high on the hill in the city centre. There is also lots of shopping, bars, and restaurants in Victoria.

Xagħra – Quaint History

Eric visited the Ġgantija Temples in Xagħra – pretty cool place!

If you can’t decide on where to stay between Marsalforn, Victoria, and Nadar, you can choose Xagħra! That’s because it’s right in the middle of all these three places.

Located inland on the island of Gozo, the village of Xagħra is known for one of the most famous attractions in all of Malta – the Ġgantija Neolithic temples.

These massive stone temples are thousands of years old. Eric visited the site when he was on Gozo and it was really cool to experience.

Because of the popular temples (and attractions like Xerri’s Grotto and Ta’ Kola Windmill), the village is well connected by bus to everywhere else on Gozo. You are also not too far from the north coast where – again – you can enjoy the sand at Ramla Bay Beach!

You won’t be right at the water’s edge in Xagħra. However, it is a nice, quiet location for exploring the island. To be fair, it has a number of historical sites just within the centre of town!

San Lawrenz/Għarb – Diving & Views

The Azure Window was in San Lawrenz… but then it collapsed.

Located at the northwest corner of the island, the small towns of San Lawrenz/Gharb feature some top attractions like the Inland Sea (great for swimming and boat tours), the Gharb Church, and much more.

This used to be a very popular area because it was home to the famous Azure Window (shown above). Sadly, this massive (and very important) rock formation collapsed a few years ago during a storm.

Visitors and locals still visit the site to see where it once stood out over the sea. In fact, it’s now a diving site and you can still do boat tours of the Gozo coast.

Check Here For Accommodations in the San Lawrenz/Gharb Area

This area is generally closer to the sea than some of the others so you get those coastal views you may be after. Of course, as with all place on Gozo, you still have easy bus/car access to the rest of the island of Gozo.

Nadur – Beaches & Ferry

Last – but certainly not least – we have Nadur. Nadur is actually one of the largest areas on the island with a small, concentrated centre loaded with accommodations, restaurants, bars, etc.

Located at the south-eastern top of Gozo, Nadur is situated high atop a natural plateau on the island. This allows parts of the area to have sweeping views of the island below.

In some cases, you can see over Mgarr Harbour (where you catch the Gozo-Malta ferry) and all the way over the island of Comino and back to the main island of Malta.

Aside from the Mgarr Harbour itself, Nadur is about as close to the ferry as you can stay on Gozo.

The large area is also home to a number of things to do like checking out the views from Ta’ Kenuna Tower, exploring the Tal-Mixta Cave close to Ramla Bay, and relaxing at a number of beaches along the north coast like Daħlet Qorrot Beach or San Blas Beach.

Featured Accommodations in Nadur

Below are some of the top accommodations in the large area of Nadur. There’s loads of bed and breakfasts and apartments in the quieter area.

That said, if you stay right in the town centre, it’ll be much more lively than out in the peaceful countryside close to the north coast. It really depends on what you’re looking for.
